Myanmar tries new tactic to remove Rohingya from No Man's Land
Rohingya encamped in Taung Pyo or Tumbro "No Man's Land" fear that new structures being constructed by Myanmar in the nearby canal will create problems of flooding during the monsoon season. Bangladeshi farmers in the Konapara area have expressed similar concerns.
Dil Mohammed, a spokesman for the Rohingya refugees, said:
"What they are doing violates international law. We had terrible flooding last year. These structures however have the potential to do a lot more damage. It will not only wash away all our vegetable gardens but will flood the farming lands of Bangladeshis in the entire Konapara area."
Myanmar has been very insistent that Rohingya refugees leave the "No Man's Land" area. In August 2018, Myanmar asked the then Bangladeshi Foreign Minister, A.H. Mahmood Ali, to cut the food aid to the Rohingya residing at the "zero line".
Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner Kamal Hossain has taken note of the new structures in the canal and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is being informed.
